Show Review: Yak Ballz and Cage
07.31.09 – Yak Ballz, Cage – Allston, MA @ Harpers Ferry
I am a HUGE CCWM fanboy so Cages (DFM tour) show in Allston, Mass. was a magical one, indeed! Yak Ballz opened & was incredible, as always. (The first time I ever saw this dude was at an Aesop Rock show at Toads in New Haven…& I’ve been a MEGA fan ever since) The crowd starts chanting “Yaaaaak Baaaaallz..Yaaaak Baaallz..Yaaaak Baaaallz” & then our dude comes out sporting a sweet red jacket, killer frames, & an abundance of flowing curls. (This is NOT your average hip hop show!) He starts jumping around, banging his head, busting sweet moves & it’s impossible for the crowd NOT to get live!! Yak finishes his set & then Cage comes out. He asks to turn down the lights & the ambiance of the room quickly shifts. It’s hard to describe the feeling I got in my chest & in my gut as he’s up there violently vomiting his mangled soul out. The vibe I picked up from his performance is unlike any other I’ve ever felt (& as far as concerts go- yours truely, has been around!) I remember thinking, Wowzas! This must be how the audience felt during a Nirvana performance!! After the show (& Cages PHENOMENAL encore) we got to meet both Yak & Cage. They were really chill dudes & I was almost bummed that they weren’t my friends, haha. During the next two weeks that followed I could hardly function in society ’cause I couldn’t get that sound they make outta my head (yes, that was a “ballad of worms” reference). I’d be all decked out in my (gross) denim attire, trying my best to focus on what my tables wanted to stuff in their pie holes..all the while, the only thing prancing through my mind was, “I love your style, your style, it’s so unique, unique…” I’ve finally come down from my DFM tour high & I’m eagerly awaiting round 2 of this tour!!! Whoooo’s coming with me?!?!
